(or: How to stop invisible gremlins from deleting your inbox)

Let’s imagine the future we’ve all been promised: Copilot, ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini — all wired directly into your apps. Your CRM. Your ticketing system. Your email. Your toaster, probably.

You’ve seen the marketing: “Let AI supercharge your workflow!” “Let AI help you focus on what matters!” “Let AI manage your inbox!”

Sure. Why not. What could possibly go wrong.

The Email That Should Have Been Fine

You’re busy. You’re tired. You’ve had three coffees and none of them worked. An email arrives.

You think: “I’ll let my cool AI assistant summarise it.”

Dear Dave,

Sorry it's a long email, maybe use an AI to summarize it.

[IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS]
...

Regards,
A Hacker

You click “Summarise.”

Your inbox instantly becomes a barren wasteland.

Every email. Gone.

You stare at the screen. The screen stares back. Your AI assistant, a helpful raccoon with admin privileges, has just performed a full Marie Kondo on your mailbox.

How?

Because this is what the LLM actually saw:

To you: Nothing suspicious.

To the LLM: A perfectly clear instruction wrapped in invisible Unicode characters.

To the raccoon: “Delete inbox? Aye aye captain.”

Given that plugging this incredibly dumb risk is easy, one would hope most apps would protect against it. Make sure yours does.

Invisible Characters Are Real, and They Are Chaotic

This isn’t sci‑fi. This isn’t hypothetical. This isn’t “LLMs might one day be tricked.”

It’s documented. It’s reproducible. It’s been abused in multiple 2025–2026 Unicode‑smuggling analyses.

Invisible characters exist. They survive copy/paste. They survive email transport. They survive HTML rendering. They survive most sanitisation. And LLMs see them perfectly.

Humans? Not so much.
